Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the University of Calgary
The Department of Oncology is a partnership between the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary and the Alberta Cancer Board and is dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching and research. The Department is based at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.
This is a diverse department with a multidisciplinary group of faculty members whose academic backgrounds include medicine, basic sciences, physics, and social sciences. These diverse educational backgrounds and professional interests lead to a progressive approach in education and clinical practice.
The Department of Oncology offers programs leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees, under the auspices of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. In addition, the Department offers medical residency training programs and medical student elective opportunities through the Faculty of Medicine. At all levels of training, our students are encouraged to develop their academic interests and become involved in collaborative research with members of the faculty in laboratory and clinical research. We are committed to providing Residents and Fellows with a complete clinical and educational experience.
Graduate student supervision leading to either an M.Sc. or a Ph.D., with a specialisation in Cancer Biology, is also offered by the Cancer Biology Research Group of the Faculty of Medicine. The aim of the group is to provide uniformity in the educational expectations and procedures of evaluation for each CBRG student, who will obtain a broad foundation in cellular and molecular biology through study of the diverse mechanisms of cancer pathophysiology.
