Decreasing the Incidence of Cancer

Research shows that more than half of all cancers could either be prevented or detected early enough to be successfully treated. Through cancer prevention programming and organized provincial screening programs, the Alberta Cancer Board is working to decrease the incidence of cancer by the year 2025.

The Alberta Cancer Board’s Cancer Prevention Program addresses risk factors for developing cancer among targeted populations. Prevention measures include tobacco control, maintaining a healthy body weight through increased vegetable and fruit consumption and increased physical activity, and skin cancer prevention.

One of the best ways to limit the devastation of cancer is to find it early, using screening tests. Sometimes pre-cancerous growths  can even be spotted during screening tests and removed, so they don't become cancerous. The Alberta Cancer Board has launched three provincial screening programs:

The Alberta Cancer Board also operates Screen Test , an organized screening mammography program with fixed sites in Calgary and Edmonton, and three mobile clinics that visit approximately 100 rural locations each year.
