Overview of Research Program
Paula is Principal Investigator of The Tomorrow Project in Alberta, and currently also oversees the National Coordinating Centre for the Canadian Partnership for The Tomorrow Project - a pan-Canadian prospective cohort being established to support research into etiology of cancers and other chronic diseases. Paula's research is in the area of nutritional epidemiology, with specific interests in the roles played by nutrition and physical activity in the etiology of chronic disease. She is also developing an interest in the potential for harmonization of data and samples collected in large national and international biorepositories, which will increase capacity to study etiology of rarer cancers and other long term health conditions.
Supported by the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Alberta Health Services and the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, the Tomorrow Project is a long-term research program that is contributing to the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow (CPT) Project. The goal of the CPT Project is to study 300,000 Canadians for up to 50 years to explore why some people remain healthy and some develop cancer, or other chronic diseases. The Alberta Tomorrow Project will enrol 50,000 of the total number of participants required for the CPT Project. Participants will be men and women between the ages of 35 and 69 who are willing to participate in the study until they are 85 years old. To participate in the CPT Project, volunteers must also be willing to give information about their health and lifestyle, be measured, and provide samples of blood and urine. Eventually the layers of data and samples build up over time will be analyzed to shed more light on the causes of cancer and other chronic diseases.
