Overview and Research Programm

Accurate information about the cancer burden in Alberta is an important part of cancer control. In Alberta, all cancer cases and deaths are captured in the Alberta Cancer Registry, which is maintained by the Alberta Cancer Board and used by its researchers in the Division of Population Health and Information for monitoring of cancer cases in Alberta. An expanded system is now being developed by linking cancer registry data with the data from risk factors, prevention, early detection, and treatment interventions to address questions about changes in trends over time and to evaluate the effectiveness of cancer control programs in Alberta. Research indicates that more than half of all cancers either could be prevented or detected early enough to be successfully treated. The researchers of the surveillance and monitoring team are working to ensure that Albertans receive the information and services they need to minimize their risks of developing cancer, increase the chances of early detection, enhance treatment, and improve the quality and quantity of their lives.
