Overview of Research Program

Energy balance has emerged as an important risk factor in the etiology and prevention of chronic diseases. My research program aims to investigate the etiologic roles of nutrition and energy balance in obesity and chronic diseases. Within this program I am developing two highly complementary streams of research. In the first stream, I focus on the development of methods in dietary assessment and energy expenditure, and in the second stream on etiologic research in obesity and chronic disease , using the methods developed in the first stream.

As a component of the first stream my colleagues and I are developing and validating a unique questionnaire specifically for the estimation of activity energy expenditure (AEE) in free-living individuals. In the second stream of my research program, I investigate the extent to which AEE is associated with the biological markers of energy balance and chronic disease.
