Patient Representative Services

Patient Representative Services offers a non-medical, neutral perspective to help cancer patients and their families understand their rights and give them a process to get  information and solutions to problems concerning care.  Do not hesitate to raise any questions or concerns with your region's patient representative.  The investigation process is confidential.

If you have a question or concern about the fairness of how your concern/complaint was handled, you may contact the Alberta Ombudsman toll-free at 310-0000 and ask for either the Edmonton or Calgary office.  The Ombudsman conducts independent investigations into written complaints from individuals who believe they have been treated unfairly.

Patient Rights & Responsibilities

Know your rights as a patient, and your responsibilities to yourself, to other patients, to your doctor and
to your care centre.

Patient Rights

As a patient, you have a right to:
  • be treated with care, dignity and respect
  • know by name the doctors, nurses and staff members responsible for your care
  • expect that all information and records that relate to your care be kept confidential
  • review your health records
  • have your diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis and any other information explained in clear, easy-to-understand terms
  • know the benefits and risks of a procedure or treatment prescribed for you
  • decide whether you wish to be treated. If you refuse treatment, you will be informed of the medical consequences of your decision
  • refuse to sign a consent form if you feel everything has not been clearly explained. You can cross out any part of the consent form that you do not want applied to your care
  • change your mind about any procedure for which you have given your consent
  • agree or refuse to take part in medical training programs and research projects
  • change doctors or other caregiver, when possible
  • voice complaints or concerns regarding the quality of care and service you receive and know that this will in no way have a negative effect on your care. If you have a complaint or feel your rights are not being respected, please let the staff know or call the Patient Representative for your care centre.

Patient responsibilities

You are to:

  • provide accurate and complete information about your present health and your medical history. This includes past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications you are taking and other health matters. Please tell your doctor about any alternative therapies, complementary therapies, herbs, and/or vitamins you are using. Also, please tell us if you have a personal directive.
  • ask questions until you clearly understand your diagnosis, treatment or method of care
  • respect the privacy of other patients.

Smoking is prohibited in the care centres, on their grounds and parking lots.

Many cancer patients are very sensitive to various scents and odours. For this reason, we would ask you to avoid wearing perfume and other scents during your visit to the cancer centre.
