Provincial Family Physician Initiative
The Provincial Family Physician Initiative is a new initiative of the Alberta Cancer Board, based in the Division of Medical Affairs & Community Oncology. The purpose of the Provincial Family Physician Initiative is to support a strategic and collaborative relationship between the ACB and family physicians across Alberta.
The Alberta Cancer Board recognizes the important role of family physicians across the cancer control spectrum, as an integral link in providing cancer patients with current, accessible and responsive information and care. In September 2005, the ACB began work on the new Provincial Family Physician Initiative with the assistance a multi-partner Steering Committee including Calgary Health Region, Capital Health, the Alberta College of Family Physicians, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta , and the Alberta Cancer Board.
The PFPI Steering Committee has used input from a Round Table Meeting in October 2005 with 23 family physicians representing all nine health regions to develop its Workplan. Areas to be addressed include access to cancer specialists and information, communication between care providers, and education to support the needs of cancer patients. Several Working Groups are being formed to address specific areas of the Workplan. Click here for an organizational chart or Working Group descriptions.
This project is a major focus of the Division of Medical Affairs & Community Oncology for the 2006-07 fiscal year with initial outcomes expected before end of 2006.
