Tapestry - Weaving together the threads of a life

A Residential Support Program for People Living with Cancer

The Tapestry Retreat Program is given over five days at a Retreat and Renewal Centre in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, northwest of Calgary, Alberta, and is open to all people experiencing cancer.

Many people who are dealing with cancer find that their bodies are being well taken care of, but emotional and spiritual needs are also important. This program is modeled after the well regarded Commonweal Cancer Help Program in Bolinas, California. It has been designed to incorporate a holistic approach to the well-being of the individual. We recognize that cancer is far more than simply a biological experience. The intention of the Tapestry retreat is not to offer a cure, but to provide the nuturance and quietude in which to explore the experience of cancer.

During each retreat, participants will be offered an opportunity to spend time in group and individual sessions with the professional counselling staff from the Alberta Cancer Board, write in journals and
enjoy the natural surroundings. Other activities may include some of the following:

  • Narrative support group
  • Individual counselling
  • Yoga/meditation
  • Artistic expression
  • Massage
  • Sandtray
  • Information on complementary therapies

Our program began in June 1998, and the following comments were received from participants:

"I have a real sense of peace coming away. I feel I won't live my life in fear any more."
Calgary Herald, July 15, 1998

"When you are in a valley or desert you have to walk alone. When you come here, each person is giving you water. With each cup of water, you become replenished."
Calgary Herald, July 15, 1998
