About Us
All staff of the Department of Medical Physics of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre are funded directly or indirectly by the Alberta Cancer Board (ACB). To reflect the close ties with the University of Calgary and the academic mandate of the Department, some of the physicists are employees of the University but still with funding originating from the ACB.
Within the Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary, there are two Divisions involved in the provision of radiation treatment services to cancer patients in Southern Alberta. These are the Division of Radiation Oncology (Head: Dr. David Skarsgard) and the Division of Medical Physics (Head: Dr. Peter Dunscombe). Both Divisions report to the Head of the Department of Oncology who is also the Director of the TBCC and a Vice President of the Alberta Cancer Board (Dr. Peter Craighead).
The Clinical Department of Radiation Oncology of the TBCC encompasses the 14 staff radiation oncologists and the treatment radiation therapists along with secretarial and clerical staff.
The Clinical Department of Medical Physics includes 12 staff physicists, 19 therapists in the treatment preparation area (mould room, simulator and treatment planning), electronics, computer and machine shop staff as well as physics assistants and secretarial and clerical staff.
The Department supports the treatment of approximately 3000 new and re-treat patients annually on 10 megavoltage units. A full range of auxiliary equipment is available including one conventional and 2 CT simulators, HDR and prostate brachytherapy and treatment planning on the Eclipse© Treatment Planning System. Active clinical programs exist in Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, Prostate Brachytherapy, Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Image Guided Radiation Therapy is under active development.
In addition to clinical support activities, members of the Division participate in a variety of academic programs. Through appointments in the Departments of Oncology and Physics and Astronomy, graduate and undergraduate programs in physics are offered. Staff also provide educational support to the Radiation Oncology Residency Program and the School of Radiation Therapy.
Research interests are diverse and reflect both the interests of the academic staff and clinical priorities within the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.
