Admission Requirements
Students enrolling in graduate programs in the Radiation Oncology Physics specialty of the Department of Physics and Astronomy are expected to be prepared to excel in advanced level physics core courses.
Master's Programs
The minimum entrance requirement for admission to the M.Sc. degree program is an honours B.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Engineering Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, or related scientific field. A minimum GPA of 3.0 for an applicant's last 10 full-course equivalents is required for consideration for admission. The majority of students accepted into our program have a GPA of 3.5 or above in higher level physical science and mathematics courses; however, exceptional students with extenuating circumstances may be considered.
A student entering the graduate program with only a B.Sc. degree is normally admitted as an M.Sc. candidate. However, a transfer to the Ph.D. program may be considered once the student is in the program. Students with M.Sc. degrees in specializations other than medical physics may be accepted to the M.Sc. program with an eventual transfer to the PhD program dependent on student performance.
Doctoral Programs
The minimum entrance requirement for admission to the Ph.D. degree program is an honours M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in Medical Physics. Students with M.Sc. degrees in related fields may be required to enroll in the Master’s program and transfer to the Doctoral program after successful completion of their coursework. A minimum GPA of 3.0 over an applicant's last 10 full-course equivalents of course work is required for consideration for admission to any of our graduate programs. The majority of students accepted into our program have a GPA of 3.5; however, exceptional students with extenuating circumstances may be considered.
International Students
All foreign applicants should submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores for the General test, and for the Physics Subject test. All applicants for whom English is not their first language, must also submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 on the paper-based exam, or 213 on the computer-based exam. For the IELTS examination, the minimum acceptable score is 7.0.
How to Apply
Radiation Oncology is a sub-specialty of Medical Physics offered through the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Calgary. Application to this specialty is made through the Department. Students work with the graduate program to select a graduate supervisor and project during their first semester. This allows students to make an informed decision as to what research is most suited to them.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers an on-line application system for admission to the department through the Faculty of Graduate Studies which is the administrative unit responsible for all graduate students in the University of Calgary. It is the only unit that can formally admit an applicant into graduate school, and it is the unit that must approve all candidates before they receive a graduate degree.
The FGS also sets all guidelines which the Department must follow in administering our graduate programs, and any major changes to our regulations must be approved by the FGS. Finally, the FGS is involved in the administration and awarding of most internal graduate scholarships available to Calgary graduate students.
Please follow the instructions carefully and ensure that all supporting documents are forwarded to the department as requested. Applications without all required documentation are considered incomplete and not available for review by the department.
All short-listed applicants will be invited to participate in a telephone interview. Based upon this and supporting documentation, waivers for the GRE and TOFEL may be granted.
